Madonna piercing, this gets its name from the pop singer Madonna, but also from the model Cindy Crawford as well as the actress Marilyn Monroe, since they all had a beauty mark in the same spot.

It is a piercing which uses a labret stud placed on the upper lip, and thus could also be called an upper lip labret.

The Madonna is worn on the right side of the upper lip.

The Marilyn piercing is on the left side of the upper lip.

A piercing worn in the middle of the upper lip is called a Medusa piercing.

This form of piercing emerged in the 1990s and was first made popular by Rayna Foss-Rose, the bassist of the band Coal Chamber. In recent years it has been in great demand, as can be seen by a host of celebrities including Travis McCoy, Mutya Buena, Ashley Massaro, and Amy Winehouse. In fact, many stars today are fans of this piercing.

Healing and care:

A Madonna piercing can take between 24 days and 2 months to heal completely, rarely longer.

This type of piercing can be seen as both an external and an oral piercing, and should be cared for accordingly.

Like other mucous membrane piercings, in the first three weeks it should be cleaned with ProntoLind spray twice a day, and then with a ProntoLind mouthwash.

It is important to wash your hands before touching the pierced area and the jewelry itself—the hands should be kept away from the mouth.

ProtoLind mouthspray tastes good and helps to freshen your breath. It is ideal for when you’re on the go and should be applied after every meal in order to disinfect and cleanse the piercing area.

Disinfectant solutions containing alcohol or chlorine should be avoided. Mouthwashes are no substitute for proper care and should therefore be avoided.

The right nutrition is vital for oral piercings, and you will find detailed information on this topic in the care and maintenance section.

Jewelry:

This piercing, too, uses labret studes between 1.2-1.6mm in size; but rings are also an option.

Keep in mind:

Like the traditional labret piercing, a PTFE stud is recommended here.
