Naturally the labret doesn’t have to be on the left or right side, but can be placed wherever one wishes along the bottom lip.

When two labret piercings are right next to each other, they are referred to as “pairs.”

When two labret piercing are symmetrically placed on both sides of the lip, they are known as “Snake-Bites”.

When a labret sits directly in the middle of the lip, it is called a chin-labret.

Origins:

The labret is a variation on the wooden peg and the lip plate worn by certain primitive tribes. To today, many of these physical adornments define one’s social position within a tribe, e.g. the Inuits. For the women these adornments were a sign of beauty and were highly prized.

Jewelry:

This form of piercing involves specially designed labret studs 1.2-1.6mm in size. Ball closure rings or circular barbell rings can also be worn like Seamless Segment Rings and Clicker.

Keep in mind:

Because the clasp of the stud lies inside the mouth, it is recommended that you use a stud made out of PMFK/Bioplast or PTFE, since they are less invasive for teeth and gums. We have a wide selection of jewelry and materials for this type of piercing.

Healing and care:

A labret piercing can take between 24 days and 2 months to heal completely, rarely longer.

This type of piercing can be seen as both an external and an oral piercing, and should be cared for accordingly.

Like other mucous membrane piercings, in the first three weeks it should be cleaned with ProntoLind spray twice a day, and then with a ProntoLind mouthwash.

It is important to wash your hands before touching the pierced area and the jewelry itself—the hands should be kept away from the mouth.

ProtoLind mouthspray tastes good and helps to freshen your breath. It is ideal for when you’re on the go and should be applied after every meal in order to disinfect and cleanse the piercing area.

Disinfectant solutions containing alcohol or chlorine should be avoided. Mouthwashes are no substitute for proper care and should therefore be avoided.

The right nutrition is vital for oral piercings, and you will find detailed information on this topic in the care and maintenance section.
